No longer ‘Young and Restless’ it’s DAVETTA SHERWOOD STONE

She’s an award-winning actress for her turn as Lily on the hit daytime series, “The Young and the Restless.”

Davetta Sherwood Stone was a fabulous guest when she visited our show on Jan 23rd. The stunning actress and singer gave us a glimpse into the mind of a young woman who has come into her own, seemingly unscathed by the tainted lifestyles that plague so many young people in Tinseltown – and she’s all the better for it (so were we).

You can hear the entire interview here.

Blacks in Hollywood: Being candid w Derrick Muhammad

Derrick Muhammad is a comedian/actor/film critic, And he’s hilarious! I “found” him when he made a pretty funny post on a social network (we are members of the same group) and I’ve been smitten by him ever since.

Muhammad is rather frank about films. He ‘tells it like it is’ and doesn’t care who doesn’t like it. It’s was I enjoyed most about our interview.

He has his own radio talk show on BlogTalkRadio aptly called “Muhammad on Film.” Check it out…but not before you hear our interview in its entirety right here.

“GUESS” who’s coming…

Actually the title’s really misleading (I just needed a “hook”).

Actor, writer, producer and director Hilliard Guess appeared on my radio show “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” this past week – and did he leave a great impression or what (as is evident by the continual climb in listeners)?

Guess is extremely knowledgeable, focused and career-driven. Unapologetically so. But more than that, he’s a believer in “giving back” even to the point of volunteering his (valuable) time (my words, not his) in an effort to educate others in the process of bringing their stories to life.

This man’s journey from ‘Dangerous Minds territory’ to where he is today is nothing short of astounding.

You can listen and learn a lot from the January 16th interview with Hilliard Guess right here. Remember: in this industry education is key!

Keep pushin’,

Gettin’ Back on Track…and Staying There…

I know, I know: it’s been quite awhile. You can thank my sister…I call her “BomnBomn.” She was all “…so what’s up with your blog? You need to get back on that,” and all that stuff. Hence, here I am.

But more than that, I realized she was absolutely RIGHT (and now she’ll be absolutely insufferable). At any rate, since the year recently started – and I’m only at TWO radio interviews for 2012, I thought I’d start here and do a better job of staying on track.

The fact that I’m watching the film “Limitless” for the 4th time has absolutely nothing to do with it. The fact that actor BRIAN ANTHONY WILSON, who plays the detective in the film, was my very first interview in 2012 has EVERYTHING to do with it. As I watch the film, I’m recalling some of the great moments of the interview. I’m laughing out loud now because I’m thinking of the “bootleg” comment Wilson made in the interview. (You can’t miss it. Promise. I totally lost it.)

It was another great interview with a man who is both gracious and humble…nothing like the character in the film. In fact, he’s such a humble man that HE called ME the following day to apologize for ‘taking over the interview’ and talking too much! (Is he kidding? That’s the perfect interview from my standpoint…and I told him so.)

You can hear the January 2nd interview in its entirety right here. Enjoy!

All the best,

~ Juice!

PS: Be on the lookout for the recap of my recent interview with writer, producer, director Hilliard Guess!

Chaysen Stylefreer: Actor, model, hip/hop artist…and chef?

One of the pleasant surprises I had when I interviewed Chaysen “Stylefreer” Beacham is that he’s a corporate chef by day. I don’t know about you, but I just didn’t see that one coming. Seriously!

But there were other surprises too. Like the reason behind the change in his moniker. He recently changed his name to reflect a new attitude, so he nixed Beacham and replaced it with Stylefreer. Why? Because the new name reminds him that he has no limitations (creatively speaking); for SF (Stylefreer) there are no boundaries.

It’s amazing that he’s just early 20’s and yet his mentality is rather sophisticated. But listen and decide for yourself…don’t take my word for it.

At any rate, Chaysen “Stylefreer” Beacham is a young man who’s head is on straight…to the top.

A Delicate Discussion with the writer/director of “Snipped”

Corey L. Branch is NOT like most men – at all! He talks freely and openly about a lot of things: mainly his own experience of having a vasectomy. And then he even went so far as to write about it – and appear in the short film version of “Snipped,” which documents a man’s “traumatic experience” (yeah, right!) of this minor procedure.

That’s one of the reasons I wanted to interview Branch: his brutal honesty. He’s a tactful yet no-holds-barred kinda guy…just the kind who will prosper in that land of the business of the show – Hollywood.

It was a great interview – and I’m looking forward to what’s coming down the pike for him…and something IS coming down that pike.

Brand: Kindness — My take on actor/stuntman RC Ormond

Brand: Kind

On Wednesday I had the utmost pleasure in interviewing actor and stuntman RC Ormond.

While he’s filled with confidence, he’s not at all arrogant. In fact, he seems to find something positive to say about others. And though he’s certainly carved out a niche for himself on the Hollywood scene (Transformers the movie, The Time Machine, NBCs The Office, Fox’s Bones – the list goes on), he’s totally enthralled with family and values and, yes, God.

RC is probably the most un-Hollywood person I’ve interviewed yet…or will interview in the future.

And for that reason I will not go on any further; for mere words cannot enhance the man he is today. The best that I can do is leave you with this link so you can hear for yourself.

Yes, RC Ormond is the true essence kindness. And that’s not a bad trait at all to have.

Kickin’ it with author/coach Sallie Felton

I had a blast “kickin’ it” with motivational coach/author Sallie Felton on Tuesday. She is NOT at all what I had expected. I was thinking of a rather demure, understated “Now, now little Johnny,” kind of ‘coach’ – you know the ones I mean.

Sallie Felton is NONE of those. She’s a firecracker! She tells it like it is (nicely, I might add). Sallie is that type of person that I just can’t see anyone getting annoyed at. She seems to be the type of person you would thank for making you bawl your eyes out. (I mean that as a compliment, Sallie. Really. I do.)

Point is: this interview was a real eye-opener. One that I’m guessing a LOT of people could use over and over again for a self-examination of where they’re going in their own lives. In fact, consider it my gift to you: here. Download it and keep the link.

Listen intently. You’re bound to pick up a few good life tips…and a whole lot more.

…and don’t say I never gave you anything.

Brand: Jetsetter – The brand that is Teri Johnson

Teri Johnson is producer and co-host of Travelista, an online travel series seen around the world. She was my guest on this past Monday’s segment of “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown.”

She’s a woman of many talents. In fact, when I first contacted Teri to be on the show, it was due her acting skills (she played a key role in 2008′s Jury of Our Peers). At that time, Teri told me that, although she is considered an actress, she is now more focused on the travel show and her behind-the-scene responsibilities.

She’s absolutely right! An interview solely based on her acting “chops” would be a great disservice to her; she’s much more than that. She’s sophisticated, intelligent, beautiful.

Teri Johnson is all those things a true jetsetter should be.

Your brain on Juice

Welcome to Branding Juice, the newest of my several blogs…blah. blah. blah.

No, this isn’t your usual “welcome to the my new blog” blog. This is my own personal knock- it-out-of-the-park, avoid cliches and talkie stuff.

In short, I’m just going to do the doggone thing.

And then I’m going to blog about it. Alot. So you’ll actually read of my victories and shortcomings, my fails and wins. More than anything else you might have read about me, this blog will leave me naked (not in the actual sense…I don’t do horror) and vulnerable.

This blog is me. “Juice.” Branded.

A book on the market

…and just so you’re aware: eBooks ARE books!

That said, I’m happy to report that my first eBook, “You Can Become a Freelance Writer in 60 Days!” is doing quite well on Smashwords.com.

Wasn’t all that sure about Smashwords initially. Let’s face it: the name doesn’t exactly instill confidence in the ‘selling books’ business. But to my delight, Smashwords really is a great concept, an easy-to-use self-publication tool, and (best of all!) FREE to setup and start the selling process.

All in all, it’s not a bad move. For the self-published writer (like me), it works just fine. So I highly recommend that you give it a try if you’re in the business of writing.

The force that is Shirley Marquez

This post is dedicated to the force that is Shirley Marquez.

Shirley is a new author. Her book “My Reflection in His Eyes” is a real-life account of her trials and tribulations following the brutal assault on her son Bryce. It covers nearly EVERYTHING: her anger, vengeance and most importantly, her level of forgiveness.

We can all learn something from Shirley’s book.

Tonight we held Shirley’s first book signing at the Staybridge Suites in Harrisburg. Everything was against us: the icy conditions, the impending storm (which never occurred thankfully) and other general mishaps that is simply ‘life.’ Shirley rose above it all.

Telling me that she was a little nervous prior to the start of the event, once I introduced her to her audience, Shirley “sang” like Leontyne Price at the Metropolitan. She was brilliant!

I hope to work with Shirley on many more projects…and I guarantee you’ll be hearing more from this empowered woman, this devoted mother, this force that IS Shirley Marquez!

101 Behaviors a Guy Needs to Understand His Woman

…Now that I have your attention, the above named post (101 Behaviors a Guy Needs to Understand His Woman!) is also the name of a new book written by Jaymes Ian Woode currently of Washington, DC, by way of Mars.

Tonight I had the pleasure of interviewing Woode on my BlogTalkRadio show, aptly titled “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” which airs weekly. Gotta tell ya’: That was one lively discussion! How lively? Let me put it this way: Prior to the broadcast Jaymes was known as an author. As of this writing I’m sure his moniker reads “Author and Man on the Run!”

In the vernacular, ‘dude is some’um!’ though he definitely has some good points (several in fact). He’s also a great interviewee as well as a more-than-competent marketer (it’s no surprise the book came out near Valentine’s Day).

So if you’re looking for a great topic to start a battle of the sexes, humorous entertainment for late night reading, or just because, you’ll want to grab a copy of Woode’s 101 Behaviors a Guy Needs to Understand His Woman!

Monday, Monday (every other day of the week is fine)

Yeah, I’m telling my age with that title, but I don’t care.

At this (st)age in my life, I say exactly how I feel. And I’m not feeling great this Monday morning. Turns out (1) an incredible amount of sugared cereals really ARE bad for diabetes; (2) fibromyalgia and diabetes are NOT compatible (not they were great on their own); and (3) “nearly” 50 only means that you’re (likely) two-thirds dead.

That’s how I’m feeling this morning. (The pain! O’ the pain!) My muscles hurt. My legs hurt. My arms hurt. But it’s my own doing. My own ignorance. I knew the moment I put that dry Cap’n Crunch cereal in that great big bowl, that it was a bad call – but I just couldn’t help myself. Then I knew on the second bowl that my body would turn on me. (Actually I think I knew it as I ripped open the box on the way home and was chomping at the bit rolling down the roadway. Yeah, I got issues.)

Point is it was stupid. Big stupid! (I never claimed to be a genius.) At any rate, “work” calls and I must press through the pain. Which is why I’m writing this blog post. Because, regardless of pain or torment, or whatever else day brings, “branding” can never take a day off.

Yes, sometimes branding hurts.

Ouch.

Baggin’ a big one…

What can I say? I’m on a roll.

Following the “all they can do is say no!” logic that I learned from my eldest sibling, I sent an email to one of the most notable musicians on the scene today to invite him on my BlogTalkRadio show – and within a few short hours received a response: HE SAID YES!

After the initial shock, I thought: “Well, that wasn’t difficult at all. I’m going to start sending requests to EVERYBODY! And I did. Still waiting to hear back from the rest, but for now nothing’s going to disturb my groove.

So it’s with great pleasure that I post the following confirmed interview scheduled for NEXT Wed, Feb 16th, at 4pm EST with the one – the only – GEORGE DUKE!

To listen LIVE at 4pm EST, click on the link at the time of the broadcast. You can also dial in and hear it LIVE from your phone (the number is347.539.5805) or you can listen online.

At any rate, you’ll want to hear this awesome performers outlook on today’s music (as opposed to yesteryear) as well as his experiences with the internationally recognized talents he’s collaborated with during his decades-long experiences in the music industry.

Storytelling as an art

Tonight I had an interview with Eric Wolf, an award-winning storyteller of the highest caliber. It was quite an interesting conversation to say the least. In fact, I learned a lot about storytelling (and myself) and am now convinced that even I have the potential to become a storyteller…a good one.

But this post is not about me; it’s about Eric and his marvelous abilities at telling the story. The man certainly has a way of looking at things. I admire his outlook, his energy, his approach to…well…life. You see, Eric was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age. But instead of allowing it to stop him, it did quite the opposite. I wouldn’t say that he’s “embraced” it, rather I’d say that he accepted the diagnosis and simply moved on.

It’s one of the things I like about Eric. There are many more. To hear more about this Oracle Award storyteller (the highest award given to professional storytellers), just click here.

Interview with Aaron Goldberg…just like “Home”

Ahhh.

That’s the sound I made following the interview of my first musical guest on my BlogTalkRadio program “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown.”

Today’s guest was Aaron Goldberg. An extraordinary pianist, we discussed his latest CD (aptly titled “Home”); his upcoming benefit for the Haitian people; and his thoughts on the trends of jazz in today’s society among other things.

He was not only a gracious guest, but insightful as well. His outlook on life and music and humanity in general is nothing short of inspiring. You can hear the interview in its entirety by clicking here.

Up next: The Brazilian influence on JON GOLD, this Friday (the 11th) at 1pm EST.

And next WED (the 16th), the amazing GEORGE DUKE at 4pm EST!

Frank discussion with jazz innovator Jon Gold

This afternoon I had the pleasure of interviewing Jon Gold. If you haven’t heard the name before, buckle in because you will soon.

Gold is a former classical pianist who fell in love with jazz during his high school years. After graduation, he attended college and majored in chemistry. He draws a correlation between the jazz and chemistry (which is honestly something I never saw coming)…but it all makes sense when he tells it.

After college, he decided to ‘take a break’ of sorts and landed in Brazil. And that’s when and where all the fun began. Gold incorporated his love of jazz with the energetic flair of the Brazilian culture. The result is a stylish, eclectic array of energy and passion in his latest CD, “Brazil Confidential.”

To hear my conversation in full, log on here.

keep it movin’…

On Friday I met with a client for several hours. As I was leaving he said, “Don’t do any work over the weekend. Take some time off.”

Sounded like a good idea at the time. Thing is: I LIKE working! I love conducting research; writing and outlining strategies for the upcoming week, month and beyond.

In short: I love to keep it movin’.

That’s why today (yes, even on my ‘day off’ – whatever that means), I took on three business calls regarding marketing, PR and strategies. In between those calls I even fit in a family function before coming back home to ‘chill.’ Or so I thought. As I started watching TV, I thought, “I could be getting some writing done.” Hence this post.

Yep. I’m all about ‘keeping it movin’.

My motivation: Chef Gordon Ramsay (if only he knew)

Originally posted in July 2010

I’m not easily swayed but I have to admit: One day while bored out of my wits I logged onto Hulu.com and – on a whim – started watching Hell’s Kitchen (season 5) with Chef Gordon Ramsay.

The only reason I did so was because my twin sister June is totally head-over-heels in love with the angry, talented Brit and has boasted of his skills since he invaded America.

Yeah, whatever. I’ll give it a whirl, I thought. I can always turn it once he starts getting on my nerves.

But somewhere between “You idiot!” and “Dumb bleeping cow!” I became fixated. What began as a ‘nothing-else-to-do-on-a-Friday-afternoon’ stint turned into a weekend-long delve into the madness of one of the world’s finest culinary minds.

I ended up watching every online episode Hulu.com had to offer during the following week, including the current season of Nightmare Kitchens, which I also have never watched.

Yeah, I’m hooked. But not because of why one might think. It isn’t that I care so much about cooking (I’m not much of a cook and am not interested in learning). Rather, I could hear “(Yea) Chef” screaming in my ear, “Not good enough, Juice! You’ve got to do better,” as I started working on my own projects.

It’s easy to become complacent when you work alone from home. No one looking over your shoulder, no one micromanaging; those are the good points to working from home.

The down side is that there’s no one to say, “Seriously, Juice? You can’t do any better than that?” or (ala Chef Ramsay) “Is this some bloody joke, woman? Do you seriously think you belong here?!”

These days, as I’m drawing up a proposal or developing a PR/marketing plan or any one of a dozen projects I might have going on at any given time, I imagine Chef Ramsay standing over me, with that evil “make-one-wrong-move-and-you’re-outta-here” stare.

Sometimes you need that kick in the backside. At least I do. And Chef Ramsay is just the one to do it. But that’s what business partners are for.

…if only he knew it.

Brand: Tenacious – The Aaron Goldberg Trio

Sometimes life lessons come from the oddest circumstances.

My latest lesson came from The Aaron Goldberg Trio last Sunday. As the publicist for Central PA Friends of Jazz, I was aware that our featured performer, the extraordinarily talented Aaron Goldberg, would be traveling to our Harrisburg concert via Haiti. (Yes, the isle of Haiti.) I expected that.

What I didn’t expect was equally talented bassist Omer Avital (pronounced o-MARE) would lose a bass string – before he even played a note. In the hands of a less capable bassist, the night could have been a disaster. Fortunately, Avital’s skills far surpassed anything I expected. In fact, if you didn’t know he was missing a string, you wouldn’t have.

Maintaining the tempo throughout this entire ordeal was drummer Eric Harland, whose beats shook the foundation. (Yes, this man is bad-d-d!)

But that’s what I loved about these professionals: The band played on. Literally and unabashedly. It kinda adds to that “do what must be done under any circumstances” mentality that many other “professionals” lack. No time for self-pity.

In branding, tenacity is key. Even when things go wrong – way wrong – you. simply. don’t. give. up. Guess that’s why The Aaron Goldberg Trio is who they are: Talented (of course); skillful (without a doubt); but perhaps most importantly: Tenacious.

Signing off,

BlogTalkRadio.com/jblairbrown – Who knew?!

Livin' the Dream!

It started as a fluke.

It was 2008. I got a random email (read: spam) that offered me a FREE radio station at the click of a mouse. So out of sheer vanity, I decided to sign up for BlogTalkRadio, becoming an international overnight sensation.

Okay, that part’s a lie. Actually I let the “radio program” sit idle for over a year. Well over a year. Truth was, I was stuck. Once I became a radio host, I realized that I actually (gulp!) needed CONTENT! And that’s where things went awry. You see, I wasn’t prepared to put the work out that I needed to make the program work. In fact, I just didn’t care about the station at all.

That was until I realized I had something valid to offer. As a freelance writer with a desire to write my own eBook, I realized that there was a lot of the writing “business” that I wasn’t aware of. I thought that others might be in the same boat: great “writers-but-now-what?!” writers. And that’s what I focused on…in the beginning. I interviewed authors and poets, focusing on ‘all things written.’

…and “Livin’ the Dream! w JBlair Brown” was born. It was everything I had hoped…

…until…

Brand: Caring – Author and motivational speaker Cheryl Wood

Less than an hour ago I interviewed Cheryl Wood (author, How I Flatlined and Woke Up in 45 Days) on my BlogTalkRadio “Livin’ the Dream!” program. Had a blast!

Cheryl covered several points regarding the challenges many women face and how to face those challenges head-on. (She’s a firecracker, that Cheryl!) You wouldn’t know it to hear her, but Cheryl was actually one of those women who were “stuck” in life: nowhere to run, nowhere to hide – but still devoted to taking care of the kids, the spouse, the house – all the while putting in a full day of work outside of the home.

But there was one thing that Cheryl said that truly resonated with me. When asked if she received help to get back to ‘being herself’ (or, as she puts it: getting out of the flatline) she said that she had to go that road alone. Cheryl realized that is was HER life to achieve and if she really wanted to appreciate it, it had to be HER to make the changes in her own life. She couldn’t depend on someone else.

So how did Cheryl get motivated? She started to help others. Isn’t that a simple concept? Helping others. It wasn’t until she decided to help others that she found the help that she needed to transform her own life. (You can hear Cheryl’s entire interview here.)

The lesson (for me at least) is this: sometimes we have to get outside of our self to be better than our self. In other words: stop wallowing in self-pity, stop procrastinating, stop whining – and get up and help somebody. It doesn’t have to be an over-the-top kind of help…maybe just pick up groceries for an elderly neighbor, tutor a kid, wash a widow’s car. Maybe you can read to the blind, slip a $5 gift certificate to a needy co-worker, or (here’s a concept)…just.be.kind.

The point is this: sometimes our motivation comes from the most unlikely of acts…like caring for someone else.

Now that’s one heck of a brand!

’til next time…

Brand: Integrity – Who is Amy Banks?

On Wednesday afternoon, I had the pleasure of interviewing jazz vocalist Amy Banks on “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown.”

She gives 100 percent

During the program, I mentioned that Banks is a former board member of Central PA Friends of Jazz, one of the nation’s oldest jazz organizations. If you’ve ever been a member of a board, you’ll likely understand the time and effort one must put forth in order to accomplish any good. Amy Banks accomplished a lot of good.

That’s why Amy is my poster child for Integrity. She’s a ‘hundred-percenter’ – one who gives her all for the good of the project. Case in point: At point 09:15 of the interview, we discuss the “Lovely Ladies of Jazz,” which Amy organized. The Ladies, comprised of noted performers Cathy Chemi; Rosemary Hudson, Jennifer Lobo; Coco Coleman, Trixie Greiner as well as Banks, perform as solo acts in and around the Central PA area, particularly at the Olde Greenfield Inn in Lancaster, PA. This act of unselfishness is (generally) unheard of in the competitive industry of entertainment. But that’s Amy – doing what she must for the greater good – even if that greater good means less work and notoriety for herself.

…and therein lies the very essence of Integrity. And the brand that is Amy Banks.

Brand: Dedicated – Women in Film & Video

Hilarey Kirsner, president of the non-profit organization Women in Film & Video (WIFV*), was my guest on Friday’s “Livin’ the Dream” program. Kirsner described for us the benefits of membership which, quite frankly, floored me.

You see, when I invited Kirsner to be a guest on the show, I was merely intrigued with the organization’s upcoming Media Job Fair, scheduled for Sat, Mar 12th in Washington, DC. I had no idea that the organization also provides scholarships, free film screenings and other must-haves for women in the film and video industry. I didn’t know that the organization provided the necessary skills for school-age children to attend and participate in film making – often at no cost to the child.

In short: I didn’t know WIFV was so…well…dedicated. And that’s why I’ve chosen WIFV’s brand as dedication. WIFV helps women (like me) to know what’s available for them in this industry…and more importantly: how to go about getting it. WIFV provides the necessary tools for women to succeed in an industry that heavily relies on women for the bottom line – as long as that women is stationed before the camera and not behind it.

This ain’t some soapbox. Numbers don’t lie. According to a recent study, of the top 250 films in 2009, women accounted for just:

  • 8% of all writers
  • 17% of all executive producers
  • 23% of all producers
  • 18% of all editors
  • 2% of all cinematographers

There’s more – lots more – you need to know about WIFV. And you can find out more but listening to Hilarey Kirsner’s interview in it entirety right here.

* WIFV is an affiliate of Women in Film and Television International (WIFTI), a global network of nearly 40 chapters  worldwide.

Real work never stops

For the past week I’ve been battling what’s been one of the worst colds in modern-day history. In fact, I’m pretty sure that what I experienced was, not merely a ‘cold’ but some form of viral terrorism. It was bad.

Still, the work had to continue. Not that anyone noticed, mind you. (It’s pretty hard to see one working diligently while burrowed into a down pillow and covered from head to toe under mounds of comforters. Trust me though: I was working.) I say all that to say this: when you’re as sick as I was, thinking IS working. And I was thinking. A lot. Not just about the big, juicy burger I was going to make after I convalesced (although it was a definite priority), but about my clients, their needs and how I could better serve them.

Then I thought: hey, dimwit, YOU’RE your client too. So how can “you” better serve YOU? And that’s when I got that great idea in my head…

(Yawn!) …but I’m so tired right now. just. can’t. write. another. word. Guess you’ll have to hear my brilliant idea another time. (Chill. It’s pretty good.)

‘Til we meet again…or not.

Still exhausted, but the work continues…

This week on “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown”

Coming down from a horrible bug, I’m just now getting back to feeling a resemblance to my former self. It was brutal. But the 95% “me” is good enough to move forward. That said, here’s what’s coming up this week on “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown.”

This week’s programs are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Guests include one film director and two musical guests from the jazz industry.

On Monday, Mar 14th at 7pm EST, film director Darren Hoffman will discuss his upcoming documentary, “Tradition is a Temple,” which covers the New Orleans jazz scene and how New Orleans is affected by jazz today.

Wednesday, Mar 16th at 2pm EST, we’ll speak with jazz saxophonist Eric Darius. Darius will talk about his rise in the jazz industry, starting with that first saxophone he received for his 10th birthday as well as his upcoming tour.

Etienne Charles to appear in Harrisburg PA on March 20th

Friday, March 18th at 2pm EST will feature Central PA Friends of Jazz‘s featured performer Etienne Charles! Charles, who will appear at CPFJ’s upcoming Sunday concert on Sunday the 20th at the Hilton Harrisburg. We’ll talk about his  background in music, his newly released CD, and what’s in store for his Harrisburg audience.

Hope you can make my programs this weeks, folks!

Signing off for now.

My most humiliating opening EVER!

Last night I had an interview with film director Darren Hoffman whose upcoming documentary Tradition is a Temple will soon become available.

It was great. Almost.

Here’s what happened…

In anticipation of the interview, I downloaded the film’s website and cued the video for a bangin’ opening to my show. The idea was to open with the YouTube video of the film’s trailer. It starts simply with “Lights!…Camera!…Music!” It was brilliant! You should have seen me sitting at my trusted laptop, smiling from ear-to-ear, with my “I’m so brilliant” attitude. I was the Oprah from the ‘hood of Harrisburg and I knew it!

But what I didn’t know was that, apparently, YouTube is NOT as compatible with the live streaming process that BlogTalkRadio utilizes. What I didn’t know was that I was soon to be humbled – and in a big way. What I didn’t know was that my “Wow!” moment of glory was soon to fizzle into a blaze of sheer bedlam.

So for a solid minute, I was basking in the sunlight of pure genius.

And then it happened.

Somewhere around the 01:03 mark, my blissful future turned into an ominous ‘maybe.’ Out of nowhere came this echo…words previously spoken…by me, no less! My face began to contort, morphing into a “Dear Lord! What is happening?!?” fixture. “Quick,” I said to myself, “Hit a button. Any button!” …and I hit a button.

Having acted on the stage in over 100 performances, I can “act” like everything’s honky dorey – even when it’s gone horribly wrong. And so I keep it movin’…welcoming my audience and proceeding with my intro – as if nothing happened.

And it happened. Again. Same queue as the initial opening. This time I can’t pretend. If you can listen through the hoopla, you’ll hear my “Oh my word” remark – a clear indication that I’ve lost it – even if just temporarily.

Yes, I was mortified. But “the show must go on!” and so I forged ahead, smiling through it all (yet quaking in my boots, wondering if, in fact, my illustrious guest, Mr. Darren Hoffman, was yet waiting patiently on the other end of the phone).

Happily, he was…and the interview went on as planned. Thankfully.

To hear my most humiliating introduction to date – on LIVE radio no less – just click here. And if you really want to know more about Hoffman’s “Tradition is a Temple,” hear the interview in its entirety. He’s great – and so is the concept of this film.

All the best,

sometimes ya’ gotta keep it simple

TODAY at 2pm EST

It’s just 14 or so hours away from my interview with ERIC DARIUS, a remarkable  saxophonist whose portfolio reads like a “Say what?!?” (Seriously. Read all about him here. It’s enough to make anyone anxious.)

But more than that, there’s that faux pas I made on Monday’s interview with film director Darren Hoffman. I still haven’t gotten over THAT humbling two-minute intro! But…I won’t let that stop me. Today’s interview is going to be great! I know it. I feel it. And also I’m not going to use a YouTube video to try to enhance my “already slammin’ radio program.”

Nope. I’ll stick with what I know.

Sometimes you gotta keep it simple.

‘Til later,

Still here…and keeping it simple.

Brand: Necessary – My interview with jazz saxophonist Eric Darius

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing smooth jazz artist Eric Darius.

Eric Darius: totally necessary

Eric is one of those young people that you only hear about in feel-good movies: Someone with a lot of knowledge, skill AND humility. Someone who’s truly willing to “pay it forward” without asking WIIFM? – Someone who is…well…necessary.

In the interview, I asked Eric to explain his “On a Mission” project, which I got wind of just a few days before the interview. The project involves his traveling across country and visiting as many schools as possible in order to emphasize the importance of music in the lives of children. It’s a brilliant concept.

During the interview, Eric acknowledged that he is himself a product of what’s possible through a music program, in public school, no less. He’s a fine example of what’s right in music and what’s possible in the lives of our young people.

And though we discussed a lot of different topics during the interview, the most important point I took away was how much Eric Darius cares about the youth.

To spell it out: yes, Eric Darius IS necessary.

‘Til next time ~

JBlair Brown / but you can call me “Juice”
Still relishing in the brilliance of Eric Darius

PS: Join us for our LIVE interview with international jazz sensation Etienne Charles on Friday, March 20th at 2pm.

A man and his food: My interview with trumpeter Etienne Charles

CPFJ presents Etienne Charles

On Friday, I interviewed the international jazz sensation that is Etienne Charles on my BlogTalkRadio program. Though I did some research on Charles (his website is quite informative) and even tracked down reviews, YouTube videos and the like, nothing prepared me for the discussion we had on the topic of food.

The man is serious when it comes to eating. We spent quite some time on his love of spicy foods…and the fact that his stomach is made of steel. Fascinating!

But more to the point of this point: the entire interview went well! Charles was one of the most down-to-earth and gracious people I’ve come to know during my journey into the world of telecommunications. (Can Internet-based radio be truly considered “telecommunications”? I’ll have to do some research on that.)

At any rate, Charles’ love of music and his eclectic style made our discussion all the more pleasant. The manner in which he pays homage to those who came before him, and paved the way for him and those like him, is nothing short of magnificently humble.

Scheduled to appear LIVE on Sunday, March 20th, in a concert presented by Central PA Friends of Jazz at the Hilton Harrisburg, I can hardly wait to meet the man, the persona, the one who recognizes those before him. Yes, he’s that guy.

…and then there’s that whole ‘food thing.’ Yeah…Etienne Charles is a man after my own heart. Listen to the interview in its entirety right here.

’til we meet again…

JBlair Brown / my friends call me “Juice”
(Suddenly I’m very hungry.)

PS: We have TWO great shows coming up this week. You won’t want to miss them:

Wed, Mar 23rd at 2pm EST – Smooth Jazz Saxophonist Euge Groove

Brand: Effervescent – My interview with writer/speaker Deb Eckerling

A real firecracker!

Deb Eckerling is a firecracker!

Her stamina and bubbly personality came through like a charm on Tuesday’s “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” radio program. Her love for the business of writing is a true testament to why she ‘does what she does.’ If you’ve seen her ‘baby’ (her Write On! Online website and also her Facebook page, under the same name),  you know what I mean.

And then there’s the public speaking. When you hear the interview, you’ll know why it was a natural choice for her: she’s not shy when it comes to speaking. At all.

But one of my favorite snippets from the entire interview came when Deb said that parents should teach their children to speak (in public) and write well. By doing so, Deb says, parents will practically guarantee that their children will reach a certain success in life.

I couldn’t have said it any better. Listen here to find out exactly what Deb means. She’s absolutely great!

Signing off (for now)…

Not just a pretty face: my interview with saxophonist Euge Groove

Euge Groove

This past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing smooth jazz saxophonist Euge Groove. Previous to inquiring for my interview, I wasn’t so familiar with his work, but a close friend, who realized he was to play just a stone’s throw from us here in Harrisburg, PA FORCED me to interview him.

I am forever grateful.

Once I started listening to Groove’s latest CD (titled Sunday Morning) I simply fell in love – particularly with the cut YES, the lyrics of which every man on the planet should learn! It’s one of the most beautifully-expressed songs I’ve ever heard – and I’m not alone in making that statement. (You can hear portions of his CD, including “Yes” here.)

During Wednesday’s interview, Groove impressed upon us the importance of keeping up with modern technology in today’s ever-changing world, particularly where the music industry is concerned. His insight on this topic is informative and his earnestness is contagious. Indeed, I find myself wanting to know more about all the bells and whistles that make this modern-day music industry what it is.

A great saxophonist, a wonderful interviewee, and a knowledgeable techie!

For sure, Euge Groove is not just a pretty face.

Brand: Earnest – My interview with the talented Leonard Dozier

The next big thing...

You wouldn’t know it to hear that baritone voice, to watch him on stage, or see him on the screen – because he’s so talented, so in control, so mesmerizing – but Leonard Dozier is probably the most earnest individual you’ll ever meet.

I met Leonard a few months ago when he starred in August Wilson’s stage play “The Piano Lesson.” Playing the key role of Boy Willie, Dozier personified dignity, commanded attention and gained the respect of all in the audience. Afterward I had the pleasure of meeting him and – following his well-deserved accolades – decided to invite him on my radio show, “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown.”

It was one of the best interviews I ever had.

“Kickin’ it” like two old friends sharing a cold pitcher of lemonade on the back porch in mid-summer, our personalities blended as if we had known each other for decades.

He has that type of appeal. But that’s not what made this interview one of my best ever; it’s Dozier’s earnestness, his sincerity, his absolute “this is the way it all went down” attitude that made it so. Yes, tonight’s interview was just like home.

In all earnestness.

Until I post again,

The lone wolf of jazz: my interview with bassist Christian McBride

Christian McBride was my recent guest on “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” – which airs on BlogTalkRadio, an internet radio site.

Admittedly, I didn’t know much about McBride prior to my research for the show. And then I read his website…and then I heard (more of) his music…and I started to “get it.” I got that there is much more to this man than ‘just meets the ear.’

Christian McBride

He’s a bit of a dichotomy.  On the one hand, here’s a man who’s so in tune (pun unintended) with an array of musical artists: from jazz greats like Freddie Hubbard and Sonny Rollins, to the soulful beats of Isaac Hayes and Chaka Khan, to the popular musicians (ala Carly Simon) – and even opera diva Kathleen Battle.

You’d think he was a ‘life of the party’ type of musician. You know: can party with the best of them. (At least that’s what I thought.) But that’s just not his style. He admits to ‘turning off the lights, getting away from people, and staying to himself’ when he really wants to enjoy life.

It works.

This majestic bassist, this phenomenal talent – is simply a lone wolf. And I, for one, ain’t mad at him. (To hear the interview in its entirety, click here.)

’til we meet again,

JBlair Brown … call me “Juice”
I don’t care what they call it…just keep playin’ the music

PS: Follow me for my daily countdown to Friday, April 8th at 2pm EST, when my guest will be the multi-faceted stage, film and TV actor Harry Lennix!

Countdown Day 7: Interview with actor Harry Lennix

Harry Lennix

I’m trying to be calm, but admittedly when I think that lil’ ol me will soon talk directly with noted actor Harry Lennix, my hands shake, my pulse races, my nerves twitch…and this is me at the speed of CALM!

I’m not starstruck; I’ve worked with actors over the course of several years (in my ‘other’ life, many moons ago). And, as publicist for one of the nation’s oldest jazz organizations, I’m privy to sharing banter with some of the finest musicians on the planet (I even had dinner with legendary Freddy Cole – TWICE!)!

No, this is something completely different. I think it’s because I didn’t see it coming. Okay, here’s the rub…

I was watching TV’s House just two weeks ago. Lennix happened to play the role of a jazz musician (coincidental? I think not!) who was dying. While I’m sitting there, I think, “I wonder if he’d like to do my show?” And the search began. It took a little creative thinking to obtain information regarding his management team, but once I did, in the time it took to type up an email, press send and receive a “Yes!” it amounted to less than two hours!

I was floored! In fact, I wasn’t so sure I hadn’t been punked. Still, I went with it…and poor Antony! That man received a flood of emails from me – just because I had to be sure that this thing was going to ‘come off.’ (After the last email, I figured I had better not push the envelope any further…so it’s been a few days since I’ve stalked him further.)

But there you have it: Harry Lennix on MY BlogTalkRadio show, “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown,” scheduled for next Friday, April 8th at 2pm EST.

…and NO, this is NO April’s Fools joke.

Hope you can make it!

Signing off,
Juice

Countdown Day 6: …the beat goes on in anticipation of Harry Lennix

As I sit here watching TV (…a movie I’ve seen for the umpteenth time) I realize I’m not watching TV at all. I’m thinking of Friday’s interview with Harry Lennix. Scheduled for 2pm EST SHARP, I’m already prepping for Friday morning UP TO noon…and then my noon to 1:30pm EST plans.

At 1:30pm, I generally make any last-minute notes, observations…and the all-important restroom break prior to going ON AIR. (Sorry if that’s TMI but it’s the truth.)

My point is: yes, we’re just down to six days…and I can hardly wait.

Later,

Harry Lennix personifies intensity.

If you’ve been following my countdown until “the day” (this coming Friday), you would already know this. If you haven’t, see particularly day 5, where you’ll find a YouTube video of Lennix as Aaron the Moor in Titus. It’s nothing short of fascinating.

…and just to be clear: this is just one reason I’m awaiting my interview with actor Harry Lennix on Friday, Apr 8th at 2pm EST.

Brand: Busy – An interview with author and songwriter Ava Parnass

I JUST hung up the phone from my interview with children’s book author and songwriter Ava Parnass. Ava is the author of the new book My Feelings are Hungry, an interactive book for kids to help them sort through their feelings regarding eating (and overeating); it’s her third book targeting children.

I had a ball. Ava is a lively and intelligent woman, but more than that, she cares. (Can’t say that about a lot of people, unfortunately.)

She’s also a dreamer who doesn’t recognize boundaries; she soars in whatever is to come next in her career.
My final question (“In a perfect world, where would you be?”) prompted a quick “Winning a Grammy!” I responded how wonderful that would be: to win a Grammy for one of her children’s songs. She quickly corrected me, telling me that she wants a Grammy for her ‘other’ music – adult music.

The woman’s all over the place! And that’s why her brandingjuice brand is “busy.” (We should all be so fortunate.)

You can listen to Ava and all her wisdom right here
. And check out Ava’s own website and get a glimpse of how she can help YOUR children too.

Until tomorrow,

Brand: Wisdom – a frank discussion with Steve Rudolph

I’ve known Steve Rudolph for most of my life…since before our days at the Holiday Inn Town in downtown Harrisburg. I came to know of Steve during the hey-day of the Lucky Seven pub on Maclay Street (shout-out to Miss Helen, then-proprietor).

That’s when I realized that “jazz” was a real thing…not just something I saw or heard on TV. It was a stone’s throw from my home and, even though I was too young to frequent the bar, I could watch the patrons come and go on Saturday afternoons…dressed in their git-ups: ladies in their furs, gentleman in their fedoras.

It was a glorious time.

Steve Rudolph and I shared some of those memories during our interview yesterday. You can hear it in its entirety right here.

Counting down to one more day: Harry Lennix, where are you?

Lennix dialing into Friday's show!

Ok, so maybe I’m jumping the gun a bit. Maybe I’m a little too anxious. Maybe I’m a little “over the top.” After all, my interview isn’t scheduled until tomorrow (Friday) at 2pm EST. Still…I’m getting antsy, nervous, shaky. If I didn’t know better I’d swear I was detoxing.

I don’t know why this is. Lennix has absolutely committed to doing the show. His contact (a great guy named Antony – “love you, A!”) has kept in constant touch with me, responded to tons of emails and has even been (gulp!) PROACTIVE in getting information for tomorrow’s info.

It’s all so surreal.

Here’s the thing: I used to be an actress (in another life…in a land far, far away), so it’s kind of like me coming home to my roots. Lennix has reached a high measure of success (and is still climbing) of what I once attained to and who I wanted to be. THAT and the fact that he’s so GREAT at what he does…

So…yeah, I’m a little nervous about this one. But I have to look at this like any other performance: “The show must go on!” and it shall…tomorrow, Friday April 8th at 2pm EST.

I’ll be there. With Harry Lennix. Will you?

TODAY’S THE DAY: My interview with actor Harry Lennix!

If you’ve been following this blog, you know that this week’s theme is “all things Harry Lennix.” That’s right…I’ve been just a little preoccupied with the man this week (some might call it “obsessive” – yeah, whatever).

Be that as it may, I’m finally “at peace” for today’s interview for some odd reason. I guess it’s because today is THE day…and there’s no turning back; whatever is going to happen is simply going to happen. As my girl Doris Day would say, “Que sera, sera!”

Consider this YOUR personal invitation to join me and phenomenal actor HARRY LENNIX TODAY AT 2PM EST! You can dial in and speak with him directly @ 347.539.5805 or just listen to the show by phone or online and even share in the chat room we’ll have LIVE during the conversation.

Hope you can make it! Gonna be a LOT of fun!

Brand: Dignity – my interview with the grand Harry Lennix

Wow. That’s pretty much all I can say at this point. My interview with Harry Lennix went off without a hitch! I am humbled and grateful. So much so, in fact, I can’t go on much longer with this post.

I can only say ‘thank you’ to a most gracious, dignified and skillful thespian, a man who has true passion and integrity to match. And a hearty ‘good lookin’ out’ to my listeners and supporters (you all know who you are). Without them there would have been no one to hear the interview.

Treyski Entertainment CEO Tremayne Williams to be interviewed this week

I’m hyped! I have just one show coming up this week – and it’s going to be a doozy!

Director and cinematographer Tremayne Williams visits “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” on Wed at 1pm EST. Williams is the CEO of Treyski Entertainment Productions, a production company that works on feature films, music videos and more.

But what sets Treyski apart from other productions company is…not simply passion (anyone can claim to have “passion”)…no, Treyski is different because of it’s ‘passion for integrity for the art of entertainment.’ Williams admitted to turning down work that might degrade or lessen the significance of African Americans in the American psyche.

He’s serious about his craft. So serious, in fact, that he also manages up-and-coming artists and even provides a forum for screenwriters to submit their work for review and possible future projects.

Join me this coming Wednesday at 1pm EST when I interview director/cinematographer Tremayne Williams!

…just when it starts getting good (my interview with Trey Williams)

I should have stuck to my guns.

When I first requested an interview with director/cinematographer Tremayne Williams, he was adamant that he could only spare 30 minutes. Hey, he’s a busy guy…so I didn’t ‘put the pressure on’ like I should have. The conversation went something like this:

“If you can only spare 30 minutes, that’s what I’ll take.”

But it should have gone like this:

“I have an opening for Wed April 13th at 1pm EST. It’s a 60-minute segment.”

Yep. That’s how it should have gone…cuz’ here’s what actually happened: Just when the interview started to get saucy…just when Williams started his rant on J-Lo and the preposterous-ness of H’Wood…some annoying lady with an English accent said, “…You have one minute left!” (For the record: only the host can hear that annoying voice. You’re safe.)

GULP! One minute?! That wasn’t even the worst part. The worst part was that he was on such a roll – and I had to cut him off abruptly with an “Oh, no! we’re almost out of time!” exclamation. I said a quick ‘goodbye’ and was soon off the air.

Still, it was a great interview. (You can hear it for yourself right here.)

And don’t worry: Williams has already agreed to come back to the show for a ‘do-over’ of an additional hour. And I promise to pick up right where we left off today. With a rant.

’til next time,

Juice

This week on “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown”

This week’s TWO radio “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” BlogTalkRadio programs include an adventurous world traveler and an entrepreneur.

Tonight’s 7pm EST program will feature author Jeffrey Crimmel, a man who has traveled to Greece, India and all other points around the globe. During his travels he met Muhammad Ali, encountered a Tibetan Nun who was caved in for six years, and he was almost STONED to death for seeing something he should not have. And then he wrote about his nine-year trek in the book “Living Beneath the Radar.” It’s AWESOME!!!!

On Wed, April 20th at 7pm EST, my guest will be Samuel Midgette (rhymes with spaghetti), an entrepreneur with a new device called The Black Box. The Box will be instrumental in introducing an entire new TV network that will target African Americans. Nearly every program on The Black Box will be targeted to the Black demographic, and screenwriters, authors, directors, actors and all others in the entertainment industry (or want to become a part of the entertainment industry) will find The Black Box of particular interest.

So mark your calendars for TONIGHT and WEDNESDAY both at 7pm EST to learn how these guys are livin’ their dreams and YOU can too!

Until next time,

Juice

Next week at 7pm EST:
Monday, April 25th: author/photographer JANET BEASLEY
Tuesday, April 26th: culinary expert/author BRUCE CADLE
Wednesday, April 27th: Actor MOE IRVIN from ABCs Grey’s Anatomy

Brand: Adventurous – a LIVELY one-on-one with Jeffrey Crimmel

My discussion with world traveler and author Jeffrey Crimmel (Living Beneath the Radar) was a HUGE success! So much so that a caller waited until the very last moment to dial in with a question because she didn’t want to miss anything up to that point.

It was great!

As I generally do, I had a list of questions prepped for the interview – but it went so well that I didn’t finish the list…and in fact…we ran out of time. I mean really RAN OUT OF TIME! I believe his last line was, “We’re not all the same religions, we’re not all the same cultures…” and we were out! Which is just one indication of how GREAT the show was! I didn’t even have the heart to interrupt!

Crimmel is a wonderful storyteller whose love for ‘the world of humankind’ is evident in the pages of “Living Beneath the Radar,” a most fascinating read of his nine-year journeys around the globe. (Visit his website here.)

Hear the interview for yourself (right here) and decide if you want to run out and grab this book! It’s worth it.

All the best,

Juice

Calls, conference planning, negotiations…and it’s only noon!

This has become SOME day!

As of now, I’ve contacted four venues (and considering a 5th) for an upcoming women’s business forum I’m planning for October. Yes, I know…it’s going to be some quick maneuvering (just 6 months away!) – but I’m up to the task.

The conference will be the first of its kind in this area. I’ll focus on ‘all things woman!’ and of particular interest to business women (whether owning their own business, or assisting their partners to go out and bring home the bacon). Basically: it’s women caring for women. And it’s going to be great! I already have two powerful speakers for the event and am working on acquiring contracts with more…so if you know somebody…

…and then there are the negotiations for my “Livin’ the Dream!…” radio show on BlogTalkRadio! I’m now negotiating scheduling with three notable actors! (I’m constantly amazed at how things are going with my show…humbled.)

…to add to that, Central PA Friends of Jazz, one of the nation’s oldest non-profit jazz organizations, just announced the dates for its upcoming Festival: June 17th – 19th! That means lots of calls and fast! But again: I’m up to the challenge.

That’s it for me. Gotta run…business meeting in a few, followed by prepping for tonight’s interview with entrepreneur Samuel Midgette…followed by another client meeting. (I’m suddenly so exhausted!)

With love ~ “Juice”

What’s up this week on “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” on BTR

Getting right to it: here’s what we have on our roster for our “Livin’ the Dream! with JBlair Brown” BlogTalkRadio program this week. Hope you can join in!

Monday, April 25th at 7pm EST: JANET BEASLEY, photographer/author will describe how she’s “livin’ the dream!” in her life these days. She’s an exuberant woman who’s living her childhood fantasy these days.

Tuesday, April 26th at 7pm EST: Date Night Chef Bruce Cadle will join us to discuss his book “Party for Two,” a how-to of sorts that shows how to keep the sizzle in the relationship – even after several years.

NOTE: Actor MOE IRVIN has postponed our Wednesday segment due to scheduling conflicts. He has committed to appearing on a future episode.

Remember: You can dial in to my LIVE interviews by calling 347.539.5805. And I always open my chat room up during the interview so if you’d like to share banter with me during the show, hit me up (I’m not really cool…I just like to act like it).

And that’s not all: Future segments include interviews with BET.com’s Teri Johnson (Travelista), stunt man/actor RC Ormond (Transformers), R&B songstress Toni Redd and many, many more!

All the best,

Juice

Playing catch-up (not just for baseball anymore)

Ok, so here’s the thing: I lied.

During my BlogTalkRadio interview with author/photographer Janet Beasley on Monday evening, I actually stated that I would post a recap by Tuesday morning.

Then Tuesday actually show up. And I was inundated with other matters that took up my time to the midday. And then I received an apologetic email from actor MOE IRVIN that our schedules conflicted and he wouldn’t be able to make Wednesday night’s broadcast.

By the time I sent out the carrier pigeons, faxes and emails, and posted all over the internet (Facebook, Twitter, retraction from Digg and what/not), it was time for my interview with Date Night Chef Bruce Cadle (author, Party for Two).

So…it just so happened that a client was interviewing mogul RUSSELL SIMMONS on Wednesday afternoon and I needed to get out a press release to the necessary parties…and post stuff all over the internet. (It’s times like these that I realize the internet is both a blessing and a curse.)

By the time I completed the task, reread the release (three times) and then proofread it (which is NOT the same as rereading it), I was beat. (For the record: crashing on the sofa – which, thankfully is quite comfy – while watching Samuel L. Jackson ain’t a bad way to nod off.)

That brought me to Wednesday morning…when I had an early morning meeting to check out conference space (more details on that later) at TWO separate locations; followed by a meeting with a client; followed by an impromptu meeting with some very lively theatrical professionals.

…bringing me to now. And I gotta tell ya’: I’m so exhausted…I’m not going to write up the post tonight anyway.

Hopefully, one day soon, time will stand still for just an hour (or two) and I’ll get those posts to you.

I’m soooo hoping that’s not a lie…

A very tired (and delirious) Juice!

Brand: Musical Genius – a candid talk with Mengesha “MYSTRO” Francis

Yeah, the title might sound a bit over the top, but I assure you: Mengesha “Mystro” Francis is worthy of the “musical genius” moniker.

Moved at an early age to study the piano, Mystro became enamored with classical composers like Bach and Stravinsky, to name a few. But his love of pop culture, and mainly its musical influences, caused him to mesh the two into one complete sound.

It was no mere accident, but neither was it purposefully done: he was merely translating the sounds he heard in his head. So it should come as no surprise that his friend and mentor Michael Jackson supported his passion for music – particularly since it was Jackson’s music that Mystro often ‘married’ with classical.

This man is definitely going places! Listen to the interview in its entirety and find out where…and when. It’s a trip you definitely want to take.

’til we meet again…

Still “Livin’ the Dream!” one day at a time.

Brand: Awesome – an insightful perspective from Richard Norris

Just take a look at his picture on his website and you get an indication of the type of enthusiasm my last guest exhibits.

My interview with him was no different (hear it in its entirety right here). Norris shared some interesting points from his book “Hoof It!” In it, he takes you through seven steps (or items) that pertain to one’s journey through life; these are the traits and characteristics one needs to “pack” before taking that journey.

Open dialogue in our chat room (special thanks to Beautiful Butterfly, JLB Creatives, Tammy Jones Gibbs and Searchpro, as well as a call from “Hugh”) assured that Norris was kept ‘on his toes’ as he ‘schooled us’ on balancing our professional and personal lives; the importance of feeding our minds the positive things in life (he and his wife haven’t turned on a TV set in over 15 years!); and passing along positivity to our children.

It was quite enlightening. I could go on and on but it really wouldn’t do the interview (or him) any justice. Listen for yourself to Norris and you’ll no doubt understand, as I did, why he’s the perfect man for his job!

Until we meet again (probably later today…I’ve got lots to share!),

Brand: Laid-back – the cool demeanor of screenwriter Davan Holt

The interview went off without a hitch. As I suspected, the convo was just as it’s been over the past few weeks: two people sharing ideas/concepts and just being ‘us.’

It was great. At one point I’d actually forgotten that I was holding an interview with Davan Holt, a screenwriter and director from NC.

In fact, I almost “hit a button” that would have disconnected the whole interview from its LIVE status. (For those of you who don’t know: “Hit a button” is a term I use that makes my family members cringe. It’s an indication that I’ve all but demolished the DVR, DVD, hi-def TV…or whatever else was in operation before I ‘hit a button.’ To put it simply: it ain’t good.)

But back to my original post: Holt is probably one of the most laid-back, down-to-earth people on the planet. Unassuming but confident, humble but skilled, he is the prime example of one who never gives up, never surrenders.

He told us how he came upon the entertainment industry (learned the craft of cameraman in the service); how he decided to create his own first film “Jury of Our Peers” (because he couldn’t find the backing to hire someone else to do it); and what’s in the works for the future (“Jury…” out on MyPortalTV.com beginning today; THREE more films in development, with one beginning casting in June).

The man is MAD busy!

But still he keeps his cool…as laid-back as ever. You’ll realize what I mean as you listen to the archived program here.

Enjoy!

definitely ON the grid…(part one)

When I first started this blog my idea was to ‘play around’ a little bit with the WordPress format, build a ‘sorta’ brand for my radio show (which was just a half-baked idea at best) and just have some fun along the way.

Then something happened. I don’t know when, or even how, but it did. I invited author Dwayne Hunter onto my show for an interview after the release of his book From One Thoughtless Act, which tells his true-life account of 28 years of incarceration courtesy of the North Carolina penal system. It was his first interview and my first as an interviewer, which is obvious by the lack of audio quality – didn’t know WHAT I was doing.

Anyway, after that show I realized I had something on my hands. So I started inviting more authors to my Tuesday evening show (Cathleen Williams, Betty Jo Tucker, Jonathan Maxwell, etc.).

…and that’s when things began to get interesting…

more on my “Oh-my-goodness!-However-did-I-get-on-the-grid” saga at some point in the future…
